Lets Go to an Old Fashioned County Fair

Orange County Virginia has a great old fashion county fair, there is no midway or lights and hype like you see at so many fairs these days.  It is located on the grounds of  historic Montpelier under old large oak trees.

One of my favorite things that I have enjoyed watching, in the past, was the chicken parade. The children load up their 4-H chickens and parade them around the fair grounds, it is great! I have also enjoyed walking around the barns and admiring all the hard work that the kids have put into their animals.

Some of the events that are planned for this year are: Kids activities, livestock show, food eating contests, live music and many different demonstrations and competitions.

If you want to have some fun this weekend come out to the Orange County Fair, http://www.orangecountyvafair.com/, July 22nd through the 25th.

Backyard or Professional Which Do You Prefer?

Do you run a professional horse operation or do you have a backyard, hobby one?  What is the difference?

The Charlottesville area has plenty of both types of operations. There are barns that offer lessons, board, training and shows – these are usually your professional operations. Then there are barns that have only a few horses that are owned by the owner of the property and are only for the use of the owner, these are considered backyard or “hobby” operations. Both of these types of barns my have a variety of horse breeds and disciplines, but they all have love for horses and horse sports in common.

The pictures in this post depict a small, professional barn that has 10 stalls, a center isle, a wash stall, tack room and an apartment for barn help. This property is currently on the market for sale.

Farmers’ Markets – The When and Where

What a great time of year! Everyone I know loves fresh vegetables, but what do you do if you don’t grow your own?  There are plenty of Farmers’ Markets around the area where you can buy fresh vegetables, bread and other homemade items.  I was curious about when and where these markets were, so I thought I would look them up.

The following is a list of the local markets I found:

I’ve created a map with the place and times of each of these for your convenience, http://tinyurl.com/2vdwl9m

A Unique Cottage Style Barn

This has got to be one of the most unique and cute barns I have seen. The owner wanted a barn that could be turned into a guest house, if ever need be. The barn currently houses minis and has 7 small stalls, but could easily be converted into 4-5 large stalls. The stairs are already in for the loft, what a great idea. Unfortunately the owner of this barn and home is having to sell her dream property, so let me know if you want more information.
